24-Hour Inclusive Design Challenge Lisbon, Portugal 21-23 June 2012
Organised by Design Includes You, The British Council, Portugal and the CIAUD – Centro Investigação em Arquitetura, Urbanismo e Design
Supported by Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, Departamento de Planeamento de Mobilidade e Transportes and Museu Nacional de História Natural e da Ciência, Lisboa
The first 24 Hour Challenge in Portugal took place last year in the beautiful 14th Century Corpus Christi Covent in Vila Nova de Gaia. The surroundings for its Lisbon counterpart were equally picturesque – the ornate 19th Century Palacio Menino de Ouro, the headquarters of the British Council, Portugal and the sponsor of both events.
Portugal has a rich architectural heritage but the brief this year centred on information and service design for three key cultural assets rather than their physical fabric – the little visited Museum of Natural History and Science and the Botanic garden behind it, both the property of the University of Lisbon. The third was the São Pedro de Alcântara Belvedere, the open space at the top of the 19th Century Gloria Funicular Elevator and one of the most famous tourist destinations in Lisbon.
The four teams of designers were asked to address three questions:
How can inclusive design increase the physical, cognitive and cultural accessibility of an area or a building with a complex identity or history?
How can people of different backgrounds, abilities and languages engage with places or cultural facilities that are unfamiliar and grow to appreciate, and value them and feel at home?
How can pleasure be introduced as a design quality?
The jury and the audience were unanimous in their verdict and both prizes went to Sharexp, the design concept by the Gloria Lift team who worked with visually-impaired lawyer Ana Antunes. Sharexp is a mounted device where people can share their experiences in sound and images of the spectacular view from São Pedro de Alcântara Belvedere at the top of the Gloria Funicular.
The Portugal 24hr Inclusive Design Challenge will take place in Lisbon on 21, 22 and 23 June 2012.
In the Challenge, each of the five multidisciplinary teams will be given a challenge that they have to solve within the 24 hours of the project.
Each team has a designer partner who has a physical or visual disability and who act, regardless their education or training, both as a driver to identify the problem as well as a consultant in the validation of each project’s solution.
The event is organised by “Design Includes YOU” and by the British Council Portugal. The workshop will be lead by Julia Cassim, who will coordinate the work of the fifty participants. Julia is Visiting Senior Research Fellow of the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design, which is part of the Royal College of Art.
The Inclusive Design workshop is a model that Julia Cassim has been promoting all over the world. In Portugal, the first edition took place in Vila Nova de Gaia in June 2011, and was organised by the same organisation, the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design.,
The aim of the 24hr Inclusive Design project, which is part of the British Council’s Design and Science programme, and part of the Design includes YOU portofolio, is to disseminate inclusive and communication design at a professional and academic level.
The Workshop will be of interest to: Product Designers, Equipment Designers, Communication Designers, Arquitects, Occupational Therapists, Ergonomists, graduate and master students in these areas.
